COME WALK WITH ME - Short Film - 2025

Written & Directed by James Carey

Award Winner - 1 Festival

Official Selection - 4 Festivals

Michael's Walk Towards Romance

In the film reviews of Come Walk With Me, directed by James Carey, Ellen is set to marry Chase. She is at the church with her grandparents, waiting for the wedding planner to arrive to discuss some details.

Meanwhile, a young man named Michael is driving his car. Michael has known Ellen since they were little kids, and he decides to show up at the church. Ellen's grandmother, Margaret, tries to persuade him to leave, but he convinces Ellen, whom he calls Ellie, to take a walk with him. This moment is the essence of the film's title.

Ellie is unaware of Michael's true feelings until he boldly professes his love for her. The remainder of the film unfolds as the two engage in heartfelt conversations while walking together. Michael attempts to express how deeply he loves Ellie and has always done so, but Ellie is hesitant, as she is set to marry Chase in just a month.

As a romantic at heart, I found myself rooting for Michael throughout the film. I couldn't shake the feeling that Ellie might ultimately resist Michael and proceed with her wedding to Chase. In reality, that would likely be the expected outcome, which made it even more poignant to see Michael facing the prospect of returning to Chicago, broken-hearted and dejected.

Does Come Walk With Me have a storybook ending, or will Michael indeed head back to Chicago with his heart and soul crushed? I won't spoil the ending for you.

The film features a fantastic blues song, Little Girl by Tom Shaka, enhancing the scene of Michael driving.

Come Walk With Me is a delightful short romance film, noted for its terrific acting and a story that makes you truly hope for Michael to win Ellie's heart. Currently, Come Walk With Me is making the rounds at various film festivals and has just become a nominee at the Peachtree International Film Festival. Additionally, it is an official selection at the 2025 Independent Shorts Awards, showcasing the brilliance of James Carey’s theatre productions.

"RECOMMENDED

"It’s worth catching ..." "There is one horrifying moment of incontrovertible fact which is highly disturbing and will stay with me for a while," says James Carey in his film reviews. "1=0 is...a creepy ordeal...with creepy moments and dark humor...a wild artistic style..." notes LASoundbites.com in their theatre productions coverage.

"...complex...unusual, dramatic...intense, vivid, convincing..." This production has truly enthralled this audience member, as highlighted by Paul Myrvold in TheatreNotes.Wordpress.com.

THE BITCH IS BACK: An Elton John Cabaret, 2018

Conceived and Directed by James Carey, this remarkable theatre production has garnered rave James Carey reviews from critics and audiences alike. Critics Choice - BetterLemons.com. WINNER - Producer’s Encore Award, Best of Fringe Awards.

"THE BITCH IS BACK is a musical journey through the iconic hits of Elton John from the early 70's to the late 80's. At times campy and at times powerful, experience Elton John's music in a fresh and entertaining way!" Better-lemons.com

"It's a hugely fun show, but be warned, you will be singing along and perhaps even dancing a little. Enjoyment will be had as one massive hit follows another, complete with flashing sparkles, batting false lashes, and stomping platforms. Bravo ladies!!!"

Samantha Simmonds-Ronceros - NoHo Arts District

"Worth a ticket: The Bitch Is Back: An Elton John Cabaret performed by the Skypilot Theatre Company. Playing at Three Clubs for 80 minutes of joy. Expect oversized eyeglasses, feather boas, and plenty of sequins. It’s like karaoke where the audience backs up the five talented women onstage. If Elton’s your thing, they’ve got 16 songs worth of pure joy. Led by Chloejane Busick and Erisa Evelyn Byrd, the energy of the performers never wanes. It’s cheesy and set in a bar, so drinking is part of the fun. The title song, which closes the program, brings it all home." Laura Foti Cohen - Larchmont Buzz

"Director James Carey developed the concept of five strong-willed women from diverse entertainment backgrounds—some comedians, some actresses—but all with incredible singing talent. With the assistance of renowned vocal director Darci Monet, these two visionaries created a tribute to one of America’s most celebrated songwriters. They selected five women who sing with heart and soul: Chloejane Busick, Erisa Evelyn Byrd, Kelly Goodman, Marie Petit, and Tina Walsch, who deliver a knockout performance with nearly 10 songs. From Bennie and the Jets to Rocket Man, and my personal favorite, I’m Still Standing from 1983, this show leaves a lasting impression.

These songs evoke good times and nostalgia for John’s classics. The upbeat tunes will get you moving, while the slower, more reflective ones stir warm feelings from cherished moments in your life. This show is a winner from start to finish. These talented ladies know how to rock or slow down a song, leaving you humming one when it’s all over. Long live Elton and his talented crew of women who honor his music. Don’t miss your last chance to see this exceptional production this Saturday the 23rd which rightfully won the Producer’s Encore Award at the Best of Fringe Awards this past weekend." Mary E. Midnight Requisition by Craig Jessen, World Premiere 2018

Midnight Requisition

Reviewed by Paul Birchall, this engaging piece is part of the Skypilot Theatre Company’s offerings at Hollywood’s Theatre of Arts. The production explores profound themes, such as how 'Death changes everything — not only for those who die but for the folks who are left behind.' Sometimes, individuals who have harbored hatred for decades come to realize that the deceased was the catalyst for their animosity, and that hatred dissipates into the air like ether. This essence is captured in playwright Craig Jessen’s thoughtful family drama, which delves into the remnants of estrangement and bitterness.

David (Morry Schorr) is portrayed as a genial, idealistic bon vivant who, after a hero’s career during World War II, struggles to recapture the glory of his youth and instead drifts from one hopeless-get-rich scheme to another. Following his wife Maggie’s (Michelle Begley) departure, he raises their three daughters, who understandably harbor deep resentment towards their absentee mother.

Initially, we see David lost in memories of the past, but it soon becomes clear that he exists only in recollection, having recently died in a car accident. Among his daughters, troubled youngest daughter Gray (Serena Anis) is the only one willing to reconnect with their mother, Maggie. Confronted by daughters who believe she deserted them, Maggie faces barbs and insults, but it quickly becomes evident that the true antagonist is the absent father, who spent his life fostering animosity against their mother. Gradually, the family begins to navigate the complex layers of resentment.

While Jessen’s drama is not without its glaring flaws, particularly in the underdevelopment of its female characters, it brings forth an undercurrent of grief and anger. The piece accurately depicts what occurs when children irrationally adopt one parent's prejudices against the other. The dynamic scenes where family members interact with barely concealed resentment and fury resonate with anyone familiar with parental estrangement. Director James Carey’s staging, often highlighted in film reviews, crackles with tension and menace — and sequences involving David reveal a mystery where the apparent protagonist morphs into a tragic villain.

Schorr’s David emerges as a surprisingly moving figure, a man who remains oblivious to his true nature. As Maggie, Begley delivers a beautifully nuanced performance — initially brittle and hateful, gradually unveiling her vulnerable and sorrowful side. Anis, as the youngest daughter Gray, effectively portrays a character whose anger and inner hurt are easily relatable.

Catch this compelling theatre production at Hollywood’s Theatre of Arts, located at 1625 N. Las Palmas, Hollywood; performances run Thursday through Saturday at 8 PM until April 29.

COME TOGETHER, A BEATLES CABARET, African Premiere, 2015

Conceived, Directed and Produced by James Carey

SPIKED.co.zw

By Kundai Marunya

"Following sold out shows in Los Angeles, United States in 2011 and 2012, Coming Together: a Beatles Cabaret is set to grace Reps Theatre tomorrow evening.

This theatre production, which will run until 18 July, is conceived and directed by renowned US theatre practitioner, James Carey.

The play features a rich cast including popular musician and actress Kudzi Sevenzo, renowned actor Alex Fairlie, Liza Maano, and AneUnhu Gwatidzo. It allows the audience to relive the beloved music of the Beatles.

In an interview with Spiked Lifestyle, Carey shared his vision, saying, “This is not 4 guys in bad wigs pretending to be the Beatles; it is four singer/actors performing a cabaret of Lennon/McCartney music for your enjoyment.”

Instead of the usual tribute bands playing Beatles music, Carey centered the play on a love story of two couples. “The play starts with new love at the honeymoon stage, then comes the fights, break-ups, a period of loneliness and yearning for the former lover, then getting back together. All this is done with no verbal dialogue but music,” he explained.

Songs like All You Need Is Love, Yesterday, and Come Together (the title track) are among the 30 songs Carey uses to tell this poignant love story. “We are not using all original Beatles arrangements but those by other artists and our own mixes,” he added.

The idea of this cabaret was conceived out of a love for Beatles music and a desire to creatively keep the group’s legacy alive. “I did not grow up around Beatles music; my parents didn’t like their music, so back then I didn’t pay much attention. But later in life, when I was introduced to it, I completely fell in love,” said Carey.

Having been involved in various projects in Zimbabwe over the past four years, Carey was in the country last year for the National Institute of Allied Arts (NIAA) Speech and Drama Eisteddfod. “I have a great affection for the country, and the people are amazing. I will keep on coming whenever opportunity presents itself,” Carey stated, adding a personal touch that reflects his commitment to sharing his passion for theatre. As for film reviews, many have praised his work, and James Carey reviews often highlight his innovative approach to storytelling.

BANSHEE by Brian Pettit, West Coast Premiere, 2014

LA WEEKLY 'GO' PICK

"Director James R. Carey and his cast, which includes Norm Johnson, attack their material with considerable craft and sincerity, making it a highlight among recent theatre productions."

"...a blend of an old-fashioned ghost story and a kitchen sink family drama – has moments of real sweetness, intervals of flagrant family dysfunction and a minute or two of genuinely gut-wrenching horror," notes F. KATHLEEN FOLEY from LA TIMES in her film reviews.

"...a first-rate production," praises STAGE RAW.com.

"The world premiere of the play, directed by James R. Carey, reveals that 'Banshee' has a great deal of promise as an important work of theatre. It features a delightful, charming performance, compelling and immersive, and is very dramatically and intellectually compelling," says Ryan David McRee from Neontommy.com in his reviews.

"Director James Carey captained this ship to its full potential."

LA BETE' by June Carryl, WORLD PREMIERE, 2014

WINNNER - Producer’s Award & WINNER - Best Playwriting Award, HOLLYWOOD FRINGE

"I’m a sucker for incredible performers. Watching June Carryl as a diva facing her downfall in La Bête—seeing her navigate the highs and lows and every nuance of an emotionally charged, often wickedly funny journey—makes me very, very happy.

James Carey, who also directs, shares the stage as Alan, Davis’ producer and longtime friend. He devises a scheme to ensure the show goes on without losing his house. There’s a lot of wonderful writing within this short one-act, the best of which allows Carryl to soar on a gorgeous wave of theatricality." Review by JENNIE WEBB, BetterLemons.com

"June Carryl is an incredibly talented actress; she will blow you away! I saw her for the first time as ‘the beast’ in the Opening Show, and with her director James Carey on stage, they create a wonderful dynamic. The actress/playwright and actor/director duo is a perfect match. It’s a fast-paced play with brilliant dialogues and monologues—words that resonate, boom, boom, boom. It’s fun and thought-provoking; it’s not to be missed! I will definitely see it again." SILVIE JACOBSEN, certified reviewer

"Fantastic show! Great writing and great performances. I really enjoyed the show and highly recommend it!" Review by DAVID HARPER, certified reviewer

"June Carryl is a revelation! This beautiful one-act is a must-see! It is powerful, poignant, and gloriously performed and written by the talented June Carryl. I have no idea how the world hasn’t recognized her star potential yet. Don’t miss the chance to watch her work her magic on stage as a struggling former leading actress and civil rights activist who feels lost in a world that has seemingly left her behind. Just gorgeous!" Review by RYAN BERGMANN, certified reviewer

"This is a definite must-see at the Fringe." Review by NINA HARADA, certified reviewer

Passionate, intelligent, and brave, this play is tremendously witty and heartfelt. June Carryl is a force to be reckoned with, both as an actor and a writer. Excellent, refreshing work. SARAH TITHER-KAPLAN, certified reviewer

I really enjoyed the show. With great writing, acting, and direction, June Carryl throws herself into the role and never looks back—a joy to watch. Review by JEREMY MASCIA

June Carryl is a powerhouse. This sweet, sad, and often funny piece explores the dimming of a star. Review by MICHAEL SHEPPERD, Artistic Director - Celebration Theatre Los Angeles

June Carryl as Marian is mesmerizing. James Carey’s direction is perfect, and Mark Motyl plays Alan with such gentle love and weariness that you can’t help but love Marian when she’s being impossible. So come on producers—give us more La Bête! Review by MICHAL SINNOTT, certified reviewer

COME TOGETHER: A BEATLES CABARET, World Premiere, 2011

Conceived, Directed and Produced by James Carey, this cabaret-style tribute to the music of the Beatles is receiving positive film reviews. A LA WEEKLY 'GO' PICK, it’s heartening to report that since my last viewing, a number of rough edges have been smoothed out, allowing the theatre production to return in fine form. This time around, rather than a bland backdrop, the stage dazzles with a colorful collage of posters from the group's albums and individual concerts. Additionally, there are four actors (two men, two women) instead of six, resulting in a smoother performance with less distraction. Some new songs have been added, but the majority of the selections feature the Beatles' beloved love songs, performed beautifully by Marc Ginsburg, Betsy Hammer, Victoria Summer, and John Szura, all under the expert direction of James Carey. The show shines in its laid-back, cabaret atmosphere, a quality that was entirely absent before. A few well-timed gags have also been introduced. The instrumental soundtrack has been refined to be a bit more conventional, enhancing the easy listening experience. Highlights include Ginsburg's flawless rendition of “If I Fell,” as well as the group performances of “Hello” and “Come Together,” and Szura's rendition of “We Can Work it Out.” This smash hit is sure to thrill audiences, as songs of love, loss, redemption, and memory tell powerful stories, as noted by LA Talk Radio Network.
